Explorations in Collaborative Audio Storytelling

Whether you are trying to tell the story of a community or as a community, successful collaboration is essential to making audio with impact.

Join us for a day of conversation and collaboration in this two part event that explores collaborative audio making. You’ll gain insight to the ethical questions, methods, and successful examples of this layered process.

PRESENTATION | 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Producers Jess Shane (Constellations, Personal Best) and Aliya Pabani ( The Imposter) will present how audio storytelling can borrow methods from community arts and works in film and theatre that have collaborative processes at their core in order to create stories that engage multiple “subjective” points of view, and hold space for the possibility of self-representation. The talk will touch on audio/podcasting projects and focusing on works from outside journalistic and reported audio to explore how the structure of audio works can be more heavily influenced by the collaborative processes that underpin it and discussing unique strategies that could be helpful to audio producers.

WORKSHOP | 2:30 - 5:30 p.m.

In this hands on workshop you’ll develop a deeper understanding of the ethical considerations at play when working collaboratively and with multiple editors, explore different collaborative strategies to creating audio documentary work, and engage in a collaborative storytelling exercise. Workshop attendees are expected to attend the presentation.

Jess Shane is an audio producer based in Toronto. Her work has aired on the BBC's Short Cuts, WBEZ’s Re:Sound, and CBC’s The Doc Project, Love Me, Now or Never, and Ideas.  She is also the co-founder of Constellations, a podcast and collective for sound art and experimental audio. Most recently, Jess was a producer on CBC's Personal Best and Mic Drop. Her love of audio was born from her community arts practice, where she collaborated with communities in accessible spaces across Toronto to design collaborative audio-visual celebrations and installations.
