Last spring, Radiotopia held an open call-out for story-driven podcast ideas called Podquest. The contest sought diverse talent, new voices and sustainable ideas that align with Radiotopia’s mission: to support motivated, independent producers and original shows that champion creativity, narrative richness, and high production values. The winning podcast idea would join the Radiotopia network.
A year later, Ear Hustle is ready to launch. The show, chosen as the Podquest winner from over 1500 entries, shares stories of life inside prison - lived, told, mixed, mastered and produced from the perspective of those living it, at San Quentin State Prison.
Join co-creator Nigel Poor, Marshall Project Staff Writer Beth Schwartzapfel, and Radiotopia Executive Producer Julie Shapiro for a “sneak listen” of Ear Hustle's first ten-episode season (launching June 14th) and an open conversation about prison culture and the challenges of telling stories about the inside, from the inside. Plus, we'll hear from Earlonne Woods and Antwan Williams, Nigel's partners in Ear Hustle, via a video message produced especially for the occasion.

ABOUT EAR HUSTLE
Nigel Poor is a visual artist whose work explores the various ways people make a mark and leave behind evidence of their existence. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and can be found in various museum collections including the SFMOMA, the M.H. deYoung Museum, The San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. In 2013, she started working with a group of incarcerated men producing a radio project called The San Quentin Prison Report which airs on KALW 91.7 FM. She is the co-creator, co-producer, and co-host of Ear Hustle.
Earlonne Woods was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. Growing up he adopted a distorted belief on life and became involved in criminal and gang activities. This lifestyle eventually caught up with him and he is serving 31 years-to-life for attempted second degree robbery. Since being incarcerated he has received a GED, attended Coastline Community College, received several certifications in vocational trades and has attended many self-help groups. In 2011 Earlonne was transferred to San Quentin State Prison where he got involved in the media program and learned video and audio production. Earlonne has a love for art and storytelling and is the co-creator, co-producer and co-host of Ear Hustle.
Antwan Williams was born in 1988 in Los Angeles CA. He has been incarcerated since the age of 18 and is serving a 15 year sentence for an armed robbery with a gun enhancement. He has been in San Quentin since 2011 and shortly thereafter got involved with the San Quentin Media Lab. He is a musician, rapper, poet, dancer, painter and actor who is passionate about the powers of art in aiding personal transformation. Antwan is also a video editor and audio engineer who has worked on many productions in San Quentin. Antwan is the co-creator, co-producer and sound designer for Ear Hustle.

Beth Schwartzapfel is a staff writer. Her long-form reporting on the criminal justice system has appeared in Mother Jones, The American Prospect, and the Boston Review. She won the June 2014 Sidney Award, the 2016 James Aronson Award, and the 2016 John Jay College/H.F. Guggenheim Prize for Excellence in Criminal Justice Reporting, for which she was also runner up in 2014 and 2015.
